Frequently Asked Questions
OPPMP treats non-emergency conditions resulting from pregnancy or birth in women who gave birth at least 7 weeks ago. Postpartum conditions clients may wish to discuss include ongoing bladder and bowel problems; poorly-healing wounds; changes to menstrual patterns; skin problems; metabolic problems; muscle and joint pain; and mental health conditions.
Please note that OPPMP is not intended to replace GP care or other NHS specialist care. Please note that OPPMP does not treat babies or children.
You can attend any time from 7 weeks after giving birth. OPPMP focuses on longer-term health problems following pregnancy and birth, and these may develop or persist months or years later. OPPMP does not treat emergency conditions, or women in the first 6 weeks after giving birth.
All appointments are 45 minutes in order to allow ample time to talk about the birth and current symptoms in detail, and discuss a management plan. Clients are welcome to book further appointments as needed. OPPMP understands that many women with complex postpartum problems will need significant time to explain the interactions of the different problems, as well as discussing the birth and how this has affected them emotionally and physically, and is impacting their current lifestyle. The focus of OPPMP is to give clients plenty of time to describe their problems in detail and to offer holistic care, working with them on solutions that they can incorporate into their lifestyle.
Yes, some women prefer to attend alone, and others wish to bring someone with them. You are welcome to bring your partner, family member or friend to the appointment if you wish. It is not recommended to bring babies or children to the appointment as it may then be difficult to discuss the birth and your symptoms in a calm and quiet environment. If you attend with an adult as well as a child, there are lots of places for them to wait for you at Millets Farm Centre, including free outdoor play, farm, and picnic areas, as well as restaurants and a large indoor soft-play centre. At Wallingford Medical Practice there is a spacious waiting room and the Practice is situated a short walk from the town centre.
Yes. After the consultation, the doctor will write a detailed summary explaining the findings from the consultation and suggestions for future care as relevant. You can access this on Semble, the secure, password-protected, site where medical records are stored. This will be copied to your GP, if you give consent for this. If you and the doctor agree you would benefit from the input of other healthcare professionals, and you have consented to this, a summary of the consultation can also be sent to them.
Details of how to cancel an appointment will be provided at booking. £50 of the total appointment fee is a non-refundable booking deposit, which is specific to the booked appointment slot, and cannot be refunded if you cancel or change the appointment. If you need to change the appointment, a further £50 will be due to book the new appointment slot. There is no specific time after which cancellation or changing the appointment is not permitted without paying the full fee as we understand how challenging postpartum life can be, but please give as much notice as possible.
Please book appointments through the booking system. You do not need a referral from your GP or any other healthcare professional.
In the free-text box please include some details about the nature of the problems you wish to discuss now. For example, when the problems started; the nature of any pain; treatment you have already tried; anything you feel makes the problems better or worse. Once you have booked an appointment, you can use the details on the appointment confirmation you receive to contact us. OPPMP does not provide emergency care, and cannot give clinical advice in response to online queries. All appointments are face-to-face at either The Nest at Millets Farm Centre or Wallingford Medical Practice.
The fee for each appointment is £360. This includes a 45 minute appointment, followed by a detailed written summary of your consultation including the recommendations discussed for any further relevant healthcare or intervention. At this time, OPPMP does not accept payments from insurance companies.
Oxford Postpartum Medical Practice is limited to providing non-emergency clinical care for women over the age of 18 who gave birth at least 7 weeks ago.
